Artist Statement (of sorts):

Overall, this semester in Art Education has given me the opportunity of experience. Many of my journals were reflecting on days of leading my own tours and lessons in the Allicar Museum or about the semester-long project of re-designing an entire courtyard to tackle social justice inside and outside of our classroom.

I really learned the importance of every little detail and taking the extra time to learn about each of your students and your peers because as future educators, even the smallest of our actions has the potential to make a big impact on our students and in our community.

This is why I chose the hashtag #thebutterflyeffect for my final ethnography project. My learning from this semester has been put into my piece in several ways. As teachers, we have the immense task of shaping and molding each student by recognizing and empowering their differences and giving them the tools they need to bloom. I collected a variety of papers and folded them carefully to create these multifaceted blooming forms to represent this idea. I also collaged a few of my past journal entries such as the fingerprinting exercise I did and the community chain. Even though each paper is vastly different, each piece plays an important role in the overall piece. This speaks to the importance of each student and encouraging them to lean into their potential. I folded abstract butterfly forms radiating out from the center in gold to really drive my theme through.

My learning experiences have challenged me in putting in the extra work, pushing myself, and believing in myself and all that I can do. Many readings and activities have equipped me with tools and methods to help my future students take control in their own learning, find their own confidence, and also realize that their own differences and capabilities have the potential for great change and achievement.
